Philadelphia’s public transit authority, SEPTA, has been leading the way in Philadelphia’s open data movement. SEPTA co-hosted a hackathon (appsforsepta.org) at Philadelphia hackerspace Devnuts (devnuts.com) in October where new APIs to the agency’s data were provided and several of their developers hung out and provided support for them. See technicallyphilly.com for a summary of the hackathon. In a follow up to the hackathon, SEPTA hosted a demo day where hackathon participants could demo their apps to the agency’s senior management.

One of the projects, dubbed SEPTArity Report, uses DepthJS to provide a Safari-powered fullscreen interface to live transit data that passerbys could interact with via a Kinect. DepthJS allows the interface application to be developed with browser technology like ExtJS 4.
